Piece Together 14th September 2017

On Thursday 14th September the Connswater Community Greenway welcomed people from all over East Belfast to C.S. Lewis Square for the official opening of the Greenway.

It was the highlight of a 10 day programme of events to celebrate the completion of construction works. Although the last section was opened in April we wanted to publicly acknowledge all those that made it possible and supported throughout the project.

During the 10 days of events there were community clean ups, plant talks, dance classes and a teddy bears picnic.

On the morning of the 14th September, communities, residents, schools and businesses were invited to walk, skip or hop the Greenway from their nearest location meeting in C.S. Lewis Square for 11am. People were given a giant jigsaw piece to bring with them and place in the puzzle in C.S. Lewis Square. Once complete the jigsaw showed the map of the Greenway.

Sir Peter Ainsworth, the Big Lottery UK Chair was in attendance as was Belfast’s Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Sonia Copeland as we celebrated the completion of construction works. A drum band helped to animate the Square while school children performed 24 key facts about the Greenway.

Michele Bryans, Acting Manager, Connswater Community Greenway, said: “It is a huge milestone to celebrate the finished works on the Connswater Community Greenway. Its fantastic to see the plans for the Greenway becoming a reality – a lasting legacy for many years to come.”
